What do we do first?

HMS Birkenhead was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was wrecked on 26 February 1852. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm on board.

The sinking of the Birkenhead is one of the earliest maritime disaster evacuations during which the concept of Birkenhead Drill is known to have been applied. It subsequently became standard procedure seen both in fiction and in life.

What is this drill?
